The Pod Project

The Pod Project is a collaborative weaving and wellbeing project created with Warlpiri, Arrernte and Luritja young people at Yipirinya School, and the Alice Springs community. In more than twenty hands-on weaving sessions, students have learnt a coiled basketry technique and contributed to the making of large, cocoon-like pods. Each pod is built from many individual contributions, allowing students to express themselves through colour and material, and experience the satisfaction of making something meaningful together.

The completed pods offer more than a creative outcome. They are designed to be climbed into, providing a sensory refuge that supports wellbeing, regulation and connection, while standing as a visible celebration of collective achievement within the school community. The Pod Project is an expression of the deep joy of sharing basketry — a practice that teaches patience, attention and care — and of developing skills that are both practical and deeply human.

The Pod Project was made possible with the support of the Newmont Tanami Operations’ Local Community Investment Program.
